"The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who can't read them."
- Mark Twain

The Pillars

Success of the Guild seems predicated on a short list of self governing rules . . . if we follow them, we should do fine . . . if we don't, the dynamic will shift and the magic and the Guild will disapear.

Participate before you participate

  • Read before you speak. This is the foundational point, it sets the tone and weeds out those who aren't willing to do the work, but want to enjoy the debate.
  • Mission of SRG is to get everyone on the same page . . . then discuss.
  • Written questions help the discussion. Field your own questions.

Be Civil

  • Really . . . We mean it! Raise your hand . . . wait your turn.
  • Be aware and sensitive to those around you. It will make you a better person.
  • The leader for a book is not the "teacher" . . . more of moderator . . . attempting to keeping things balanced and moving forward when needed. Ideally they shouldn't intervene often.
  • Stay Relevant and out of the weeds - avoid "sandtraps." Keep your questions/answers on point.
  • Keep discussion focused on current reading, OK to touch back, but please no spoilers.

Support Lowe Mill

  • Each visit do something as an individual which makes them happy to have us here as a group.
  • Take a moment to notice and support the endeavors unfolding in this beautiful community
  • There a handful of people who go out of their way to make this work . . . If you get a chance, specifically thank Anna Sue, Ashley and Sasha.

Some thoughts on Attendence

  • Attendance is certainly not required . . . come as often as you are moved.
  • This is an aggressive reading schedule which might induce burnout . . . especially if attempted in parallel to "life."
  • Think of the Guild as the excuse/peer pressure you need to push you over the top on the books you want to read. Making the difference when you need some outside modivation.
